about

The enigma of Sumari is you never know what mystery the next album will bring. The process is always the same, three multi-instrumentalists (in the future, four with the addition of Hilliard Greene on bass) extemporaneously create full compositions. On their first album, Sumari, this manifested in pieces ranging from folk-like to free jazz. On their second album, Sumari II, they create pieces ranging from floating chamber jazz to pulsating fast swing. Now on the remarkable release we present here, Sumari III, these magnificent soundscapes owe as much to post-ambient and as it does to jazz. Matt Lavelle's melodic vocalisms on his various clarinets and his tradition-soaked (including the tradition of Harmolodics) trumpet and flugelhorn dive over, under and through sonic waves of DeSalvo's vast oceanic guitar vistas, riding on the rich earthy percussion and drumming of Tom Cabrera. Fans of ambient, electronica and chamber music are as likely as jazz fans to become obsessed with this collection of cinematic tracks.
